Semaglutide & Hair Loss: The Hidden Cost of Weight Loss?

United States: University of British Columbia researchers discovered hair loss as a possible adverse effect from weight loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy through their recent university-funded study, as reported by The Hills

The Findings: A Hidden Side Effect?

A team of researchers checked medical records from 16 million patients who used medication between 2006 and 2020 to compare results between semaglutide-based drugs and the weight loss medication Contrave which includes bupropion/naltrexone. Semaglutide treatment raised hair loss risks especially among female patients who took a prescription solely for weight loss purposes.

Who Is Most at Risk?

The study suggests that individuals taking semaglutide for diabetes or severe obesity may be more willing to accept hair loss as a side effect, while those using it for general weight loss should weigh the risks carefully.

More Research Needed

Expert opinions show that additional research must occur to clarify the relationship between semaglutide medications and hair loss. The manufacturer Novo Nordisk stands firm in the safety profile of its Semaglutide-based drugs when prescribed appropriately, as reported by The Hills.
